UV-Vis Luminescence: Imaging Techniques

Ever since its first introduction in the field of conservation, the role of UV-VIS luminescence/fluorescence (UVL and UVf, respectively) imaging has been expanding. The unique and significant contribution of this technique for investigation of cultural heritage has led to the development of new methodologies and applications.

Applications of UVL imaging nowadays range from simple, affordable low-tech instrumentation in many conservation studios to hightech laboratory equipment operated by specialized scientists / conservation scientists. Currently, UVL imaging is one of the most widely used non-invasive documentation techniques; it may reveal important details, not only about how objects were created, but also about their history, their aging and degradation and about the transformations they have undergone over time.

Today we share for you the bilingual publication (English and Spanish) UV-Vis Luminescence: Imaging Techniques. The publication is edited by Marcelo Piccolo and other authors and published by Universitat Politécnica de València.

The work is divided into its parts: Fundamentals and Case Studies. Each chapter in this book can be read independently. While this means that some repetition may occur between individual chapters, particularly with regard to explaining terminology and methodology, this overlap offers interesting opportunities for comparison between terminology and methodology.

Furthermore, it highlights similarities and differences between different situations in practical application.

And if you are interested in this topic, be sure to check out our course on Instrumental analysis in cultural heritage, with Prof. doctor Thiago Guimaraes. In this course you will learn:

  1. Fundamentals of techniques such as Infrared Spectroscopy, Raman, Liquid and Gas Chromatography, X-Ray Fluorescence and Scanning Electron Microscopy.

  2. You will learn about when to choose each of these techniques to analyze different materials, identifying their advantages and disadvantages.

  3. You will learn about real examples of the application of these techniques and will be trained to take full advantage of them when you have the opportunity to work with these analyses.
